HEAL Cities & Towns Campaign for the Mid-Atlantic

Helping Municipal Leaders Create Healthy, Prosperous Communities

The Healthy Eating Active Living (HEAL) Cities & Towns Campaign provides free training and technical assistance to municipal leaders to adopt policies that make it easier for residents to eat better and move more.

The HEAL Cities & Towns Campaign is an initiative of The Institute for Public Health Innovation in partnership with the Maryland Municipal League and the Virginia Municipal League.

Healthy Eating and Active Living for Older Adults

More than ever before, older Americans are working longer, trying new things, and engaging in their communities. They’re taking charge, striving for wellness, focusing on independence, and advocating for themselves and others.
— National Council on Aging, 2017

The HEAL Campaign supports cities and towns to adopt policies and practices that promote older adult health. Heathy eating and active living can support older adult health by lowering the risk of obesity and other debilitating conditions including heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes. Communities can work to provide safe, walkable neighborhoods and convenient access to healthy food and places to be physically active to promote the health and wellness of older adults. Municipal leaders can harness the ideas and vigor of the older adults in their communities to work together to create age-friendly environments that will help their older citizens stay vital and remain healthy as they age.
